Greenhouse gas mitigation activities need perspective beyond 2030

KliK Foundation | Switzerland wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. A central element on the way there is the funding of climate protection activities with a certified emission reduction effect. Since 2006, the Climate Cent and the KliK Foundation have financed certified emission reductions of 20 and 37 million tonnes of CO2 respectively in Switzerland and internationally with funds totalling CHF 2.4 billion.

In general, the supported activities aim to bring technologies to the market that have not yet been able to gain a foothold there for economic or other reasons. Setting up such activities is a lengthy process and certification is challenging, as its environmental integrity and sustainability must be documented in detail. The successful funding of such climate protection activities needs a time horizon of at least 5 to 10 years.

As the year 2030 approaches, the financial viability of ambitious activities is foreseeably no longer guaranteed. It is therefore essential that the Swiss Federal Council creates a binding legal framework for the funding of certified emission reductions until at least 2035. The KliK Foundation is therefore calling for the carbon offset rate (Article 89) to be set not just until 2030, but until 2035 in the current revision of the Swiss CO2 Ordinance.

Help us to support forward-looking climate protection activities with a longer-term perspective and spread our message!

Accounting of greenhouse gas mitigation activities

KliK Foundation | Are you participating in one of our support programmes with your greenhouse gas mitigation activity or would you like to do so and are wondering how its effect can be correctly accounted for? Or to put it another way: Can you report the effect of your greenhouse gas mitigation activity as an offset against the overall Swiss target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the one hand and as an offset against your own (company) take stock on the other? The KliK Foundation is clear about this: Yes! Not only can you do this, you should.

Focus on Switzerland: successful programs

Wood-fired heating

The heating in a school building in the town of Willisau broke down in the middle of winter. This incident offered the opportunity to switch from oil to more climate-friendly heating.

Electric construction vehicles

Electric machines for construction or the yard offer many advantages - but one disadvantage is the often high purchase price. Read here why an investment is still worthwhile in the long term.

Funding opportunities for wastewater treatment plants | A new fact sheet with many examples, questions and answers on the topic of climate action is now available for wastewater treatment plant operators. Why is it also an issue in wastewater treatment plants? Wastewater treatment plants cause between 1 and 3% of Switzerland's greenhouse gas emissions – mainly nitrous oxide and methane. Most of the measures that can be used to reduce these emissions are not prescribed by law and are not economic inefficiency. For this reason, the KliK Foundation finances support programmes.

Focus International: Tunisia

Tunis | In December 2023, Tunisia and Switzerland signed a bilateral climate agreement to implement Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This paved the way for the KliK Foundation to support ambitious climate action with the development of greenhouse gas mitigation activities in Tunisia. At present, 13 countries have a bilateral climate agreement with Switzerland.

An initial mission by two representatives of the KliK Foundation in May 2024 marked the start of an open call for proposals by the KliK Foundation for mitigation activities in various sectors in Tunisia. In partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of the Environment and the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia, the KliK Foundation organised a launch ceremony and a kick-off workshop for interested parties.

Watch our mini report on the Tunisia mission and find more information on our Tunisia webinar with the Tunisian Ministry of the Environment and the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia, on 17 September, 10.00-12.00am (CEST) in French.

The KliK Foundation at I4C 2024

Berlin | From 10 to 12 September, the KliK Foundation attended this year’s annual Innovate4Climate conference in Berlin, Berlin. The event brought together the public and private sectors in the fields of technology and finance, policy and markets, to discuss and accelerate climate action (see agenda). The KliK Foundation was present with a booth to share the knowledge about its model of financial support and about success factors for mitigation activities under Article 6.2 (Paris Agreement).
